A set of kitchen knives, no matter their type, demands proper upkeep in order to keep them sharp and working properly. Whether you invested in quality kitchen area blades or own a collection of discount knives, you will want to keep them sharp so they are efficient and safe.

The first rule of use for the kitchen knife is to be certain that your blade strikes on a soft surface when cutting, such as wood or plastic, rather than a tough surface like ceramic or steel. Striking your kitchen area cutlery against tough surfaces will rapidly dull the blade and hinder the efficiency of even the best quality knife.

It is sometimes tempting to use the kitchen area knife to pry something or use it like a screwdriver or chisel. Don’t do it! Even using the handle of one’s knife as a hammer isn’t recommended, until it’s specifically constructed for that task. The pins and springs can loosen or break, rendering your kitchen knife ineffective.

You should keep your kitchen flatware away from sand and gritty materials. Be especially careful when you are using your knives outside, for instance when you are camping, fishing or simply barbequing outdoors. If it will get wet, immediately dry it out. When you are washing your kitchen cutlery, do so in mild, soapy water and then dry it completely with a towel, instead of allowing it to drip dry.  You should usually wash your kitchen area flatware by hand and dry it immediately after, not in a dish washer.

Wood tends to swell, so if you have wooden handled knives, it’s best not to immerse them in water for any significant period of time. You can rub mineral oil on wooden knife handles to help them keep their luster. You can also improve the lifetime of of your wood by rubbing lemon oil or furnishings polish on it.

Stainless metal flatware should not rust and it can withstand acids that it is exposed to in every day use. However, stainless metal is not one hundred percent rust proof. The coarser the stainless steel surface is, the more likely it is to corrode. To make sure your stainless steel cutlery is corrosion resistant, you should purchase blades with fine polished surfaces.

An additional choice for kitchen flatware is ceramic knives that are durable and long lasting. However, ceramic knives ought to also not be placed in the dishwasher. They are very simple to wash; a wipe along with a rinse is all that is required to keep them in fantastic condition for many years to come.

When storing your blades, it’s best to choose a knife storage container to shield the blades such as a knife block. Never place your knife in to the wood knife block moist – wood absorbs water and you could introduce mildew and mildew into your knife block which could ruin your kitchen blades. If you are going to keep them inside a drawer, be sure that they are not tossed around a lot. Jostling in opposition to other knives or instruments could trigger your knife blades to chip or dull unnecessarily. If kept inside a drawer, they should be sleeved or in compartments to avoid colliding with other utensils or inadvertently cutting you when you search in the drawer for something you need.

Taking care of one’s kitchen blades is fairly simple if you follow the steps outlined above:

 - Keep blades out of the dishwasher
 - Wash kitchen area knives immediately after using them and dry them immediately following washing.
 - Store them inside a wooden knife block, in sleeves or in a compartmentalized drawer

Diamonds are valuable possessions, yet even these expensive stones have a tendency of getting dirty.  After some time, you will find that your diamond jewelries have lost their original luster. If set in some other precious metal, they will have debris packed in the setting.  Stones with complex designs will certainly  attract dirt and this will result in the diamond turning yellowish with time. Restoring a diamond’s luster and color is essential for you to be able to show off the stone. Ultrasonic cleaning can help with this.

First thing  to do is let an expert evaluate your diamond. They know if it is safe to put it through an ultrasonic cleaning session. Diamonds that are fracture-filled and complicated  in terms of design and setting could get scratched in an ultrasonic cleaner. These cleaners use high frequency waves and a cavitation process to agitate the dirt out of small crevices. That is why it is important to evaluate it first.

Ultrasonic cleaners made  for delicate jewelry are easily available online these days. These are gentler compared to the common types found in jewelry stores and are great for home use. They can safely be used on diamonds of many shapes and sizes. Moreover, they double up to clean gold and other precious metal jewelry too.  How it works is that the diamonds are placed in the cleaner once the solution has been degassed. High frequency sound waves create bubbles that clinch into areas where the human hand cannot reach. This is what dislodges the dirt and grime that has accumulated.

Once the cycle is over, take the diamonds out of the cleaner and gently wipe them down with a lint-free clean fabric. You will be amazed at the lustrous shine of your diamond.  This same process at the jewelry store can be quite expensive, and consequently you may choose to invest a portable ultrasonic cleaner for home use if you have a lot of jewelry.  It also might put your mind at ease rather than have strangers handle your jewelry.

REMINDER: Not all diamonds are suitable for ultrasonic cleaning. There are some that come with a few flaws in the way they are cut. If you are not careful, ultrasonic cleaning could end up enlarging these flaws. The vibrations could also lead to setting of the stone to widen or loosen up. Placing  too many diamonds at once in the unit could result in them rubbing against each other and thus damaging their surfaces. This will work negatively on its general look.

You should take extra care of your diamonds as compared to other gems. Because they are carbon based, they naturally entice dirt. Once you have cleaned them in an ultrasonic cleaner, try not to wear them if they are likely  to come into contact with an abrasive surface. Examples would be when having a bath or washing dishes. Take them off everyday and wipe them down with a lint free cloth. Separate them  from other jewelry to avoid scratches. This way you will preserve the luster of your diamonds for longer.

Cleaning your sterling silver chains can be easy as long as you know the steps you need to take. After you read this article, you will!

Step One is to gather the materials you will need.  You will need an aluminum holder, baking soda, salt, cold and hot water, a towel and of course the chain you need to clean.  Make sure everything is within your reach.  It is very important to avoid going backward and forward searching for items to as you move through the process.

Step Number Two is to create the mixture in which you will saturate the chain.  Pour warm water over the aluminum tray and add 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of salt.

Step Number Three: When the soda and the salt have properly mixed, you can place your chain in the mixture and let it sit for ten minutes.  Avoid placing your string in before the soda and the salt have dissolved.

The Fourth (and last) Step is to complete the cleansing procedure.  Utilizing cold water, gently wash the chain.  When the chain is thoroughly rinsed wipe it dry with a soft towel.  Make sure that you get any remains of the mixture off the chain.  This step is an important one, given that it is the final part of giving your chain a brand new look.  In this final step it is important to take your time washing and removing the dirt.  When you hurry, you might overlook some stuff.

Follow all these steps carefully, and you will be left with a good-as-new chain and have done it yourself with maximum speed and ease.

Aluminum utensils are popular kitchen items because of their lightness, durability and ease of use and maintenance. The various patterns and finishes that can be given to aluminum also make it a common metal for decorative household and office items. Cleaning aluminum cookware is something that needs to be done as soon as you’re done using the pot or pan to prevent stains developing and the finish getting damaged. Besides the regular post-use cleaning, a regular maintenance cleaning schedule that goes through the following steps will help to keep your aluminum cookware looking good for years.

Begin by giving the pot a normal wash with detergent and water to remove surface dirt. Make a solution of one tablespoon of vinegar, lemon juice, or cream of tartar mixed in one quart of water. Using these proportions make enough of the solution to completely fill the pot on the stove. Place the pot on a stove and turn the heat to medium (do not try using a high heat setting to save time – the effect will not be as good). If you have any small aluminum utensils that need cleaning and can fit in the one on the stove, place them inside – they will be cleaned too.

Allow the water to come to a boil and turn down the heat to a simmer and allow the simmering to continue for about ten minutes or until the stains are gone. Now take the pot off the stove and drain away the water. Wait till it has cooled and, wearing rubber gloves, gently scrub the inner surfaces with steel wool. Rub in a back and forth motion only because a circular rub will cause the finish to look uneven. Remember: steel wool can scratch aluminum, so do not rub too hard.

That takes care of the cleaning to the inside of the pot. If the outside also needs cleaning, use a mild non-abrasive cleaner or polish. If you want to give a shine to the inside of the pot, don’t worry about using a cleaner or polish. Just fill it with water, drop in some apple peels and boil the water for a few minutes. Drain off the water. The shine will have returned to the inner surfaces.

Since we use our hand bags every single day, we have to keep them looking new for a long time.   If you follow these few steps your handbags will last for quite some time because of your hard work.

Here are some methods for proper purse cleaning.

Faux purses and other products are usually created from finished leather, such as alligator.  Roughly once a year make sure you freshen them up with saddle soap, putting it onto the material using a moist wash cloth or sponge.  Utilize another moist cloth to get rid of the lather. Wipe them dry and apply a leather conditioner. Check out my other articles on leather maintenance for more tips about this.

To freshen up a straw designer purse, use a vacuum on a low suction setting. Put an old nylon material stocking or panty hose over the end of the vacuum hose so you don’t damage the straw.  Use a soft sided towel or cotton swab to apply undiluted soap to dirty or grease blotches. After that pat using a fresh dampened towel and put aside to air dry.  Do not use hot water, which could warp the straw materials.  In a case where the straw is fairly hard, it is possible to apply an aerosol fabric guard to help prevent the handbag from getting dirty.  Allow the spray protector to dry thoroughly before using the tote because it can come off on your clothing.

Silk fabric purses need to be taken to a professional cleaning service.  When less delicate cloth bags are brand-new, protect them with a stain protecting aerosol before using them.  To remove typical stains, use tepid to warm water and gentle soap on a clean towel, or use a spot remover solution.  BUT before using any product, be sure to test it in an spot you can’t see, like the bottom or under a flap.  If the fabric of your handbag is machine washable, very dirty and not too fragile, use a nail brush and a blend of mild washing detergent and water.  Scrape off the extra residue, then use a towel to wipe the handbag and let it air dry.  You may want to use upholstery cleaner for purses that are constructed with other materials.

An additional alternative to using a wet cloth for cleaning up or removing stains is gentle rubbing with a dry eraser.  This method can be used on many other items in the home including sports bags, sneakers, leather furniture covers and home furniture.
